About the filmmaker:

Fred Kudjo Kuwornu, is a filmmaker activist-producer-educator, born and raised in Bologna, Italy to an Italian Jewish mother and a Ghanaian father. Kuwornu holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Mass Media from the University of Bologna. As a teenager, he started his career as a DJ and Producer. Later, he moved to Rome where he began writing for RAI public television.

Fred was an assistant on the set of the film ‘Miracle at St. Anna‘, the 2008 film by Spike Lee about the Nazi massacre in St. Anna di Stazzema (Italy). Following that experience, Fred made his documentary Inside Buffalo. In 2010 Inside Buffalo won the award for best documentary at the Berlin Film Festival, gaining public recognition from Presidents Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and Giorgio Napolitano. In 2012, he released 18 Ius Soli which examines multiculturalism in Italy, specifically focusing on questions of citizenship for the one million children of immigrants born and raised in Italy, but not yet Italian citizens. In 2016, Fred released: Blaxploitalian: 100 Years of Black in Italian Cinema an in depth, historical, and critical documentary about actors of African descent in Italian cinema.

Fred currently splits his time between Bologna and New York City.
