CIAO St Louis and St. Ambrose Church Present Family Health and Wellness Fair

by Loretta Vitale April

CIAO St Louis and St. Ambrose Church have joined together to bring the community a Health And Wellness Fair, Sunday, October 14, 2018, in the Church Hall from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.  The event is a first of its kind for the parish.

When CIAO Board member and parishioner, Loretta Vitale April, asked Monsignor Bommarito what he thought of the idea of a health Fair for the parish, he was very enthusiastic.

Ellie Sicola (Nursing Director for Senior Services, Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center at St. Anthony’s/Mercy Hospital) and Jeanie Smith (Clinical Nurse Manager, High Risk Cardiology at Barnes Jewish Hospital) are sisters, who also serve on the CIAO St Louis Board, came up with idea. “We wanted to reach out to the Hill community, as well as serve the families here,” said Ellie Sicola. CIAO is part of the neighborhood. Its office and studio is located inside The Hill Neighborhood Center.

Together, Ellie and Jeanie began approaching their many contacts and vendors in the healthcare field. Loretta joined their committee as the liaison for St. Ambrose church and recruited a few RN parishioners to help out, including Judy Brusatti, Marsy Camino and Domenica Allen. “This committee has put together an amazing event that will be enjoyed by the whole family,” said Loretta.

Among the highlights of the Fair will be free health screenings, including blood pressure. St. Louis Community College Nutrition and Food Service students accompanied by their professor, Jeanne Florini, will prepare food for tasting and educate children and adults on healthy eating. Jeanne Florini is also a CIAO Board member. “My students are very excited to come to St. Ambrose to share what they have learned with our community,” said Professor Florini.

The Visiting Nurses Association will be giving flu and pneumonia vaccines. “If you want your flu shot, it’s free, but you must bring your insurance card and/or Medicare card with you.” Jeanie wants to remind everyone that this very important.

A representative from the Alzheimer’s Association will be giving informational workshops throughout the morning, every half hour.  The sessions will provide important education and resources for Alzheimer’s patients, families and caregivers.

In addition, Cardinal Glennon Hospital will be there with health and safety information. There will also be information and education for adults and the elderly.

When guests come in to the fair, they will sign a guest list and be given a free bag with goodies inside and they will sign up for the free raffles. Among the free raffles includes a blood pressure machine, several first aid kits and many other prizes. Guests will be treated to healthy snacks, including fruit and granola bars.  The Parish Mount Carmel Sodality will be hostesses for serving.  Marie Wohlert, President of Mount Carmel said, “We are so happy to be a part of the Health Fair, it’s a great parish event”.

The Committee is continuing to work on making this Health Fair the most fun and most informative.  So be prepared for some surprises not talked about here.

Families and individuals will visit the many agencies and vendors who are providing information and education (and giveaways).  Each agency/vendor will have a table where they can greet guests and offer information and education.

For a complete list of participants and services being offered at the Family Health Fair, please see the flyer in this issue and in the St. Ambrose church bulletin.
