Deanna Shemek is a professor of literature at UC Santa Cruz and co-director of the Isabella d’Este Archive (IDEA). A nationally recognized scholar of early modern Italian literature, she has wide-ranging interests in early modern feminism; humanism and gender culture; early modern literacy and non-canonical producers of writing (women, children, marginalized communities); and a host of other provocative topics. In 2013 she served as a convener for the UCHRI residential working group Digital Isabella d’Este: An Open-Access Online Research Forum. She brings the experience of prior collaborations with musicologists to her role as a conference respondent.

Performance by Seraphic Fire

On Thurs., Feb. 22 (8 – 10 p.m.), the Grammy-nominated ensemble Seraphic Fire will be special guests at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis at 4431 Lindell Blvd.  They’re there to perform a special piece — Monteverdi’s “Silva Morale et Spirituale” — a piece written for the acoustics of St. Mark’s Cathedral in Venice.  This ensemble of eight singers and five instrumentalists from Southern Florida has been labelled one of the “most inventive and adventurous classical music ensembles in the country.”  Cost: $19 – $42.  More information at http://www.cathedralconcerts.org , (314) 533-7662.

“Love Stories” at Touhill

On Sat., Feb. 10 (8 p.m.) and Sun., Feb. 11 (2:30 p.m.), enjoy this special program by the St. Louis Ballet featuring ballets by a wide range of choreographers and timed beautifully for Valentine’s Day.  Presented by the Blanche M.
