July 9,1943 to August 17,1943:
The Allied Invasion of Sicily was code named “Operation Husky” and was led by General George S. Patton of the United States and Bernard Law Montgomery of Great Britian. The US lost 2,811 personnel, who were killed in action while Great Britain and Canada suffered equally with 2,721 military killed. The number of Sicilians killed or injured is only estimated, but believed to be in the thousands. Sicily experienced enormous damage to its cities and towns, especially its historical points of interest and the artifacts found there. The people of Sicily suffered immensely during the war, severely so during this six week period.
