(ANSA) – TRIESTE – A Polish prosecutor says that various evidence proves that a US citizen living in Minnesota was a Nazi unit commander suspected of contributing to the death of 44 Poles, Associated Press reports. The evidence were gathered in years of investigation, prosecutor Robert Janicki says, and confirm “100 percent” that he was the commander of a unit in the SS-led Ukrainian Self Defense Legion. This unit is accused of war crimes in Poland. The Associated Press has identified the man as 98-year-old Michael Karkoc. Karkoc’s family denies that he was involved in any war crimes. A local court in Poland is asked to issue an arrest warrant for Karkoc. If granted, Poland would seek his extradition, Janicki said. (ANSA).
